ladies and gentlemen: my topic is honesty. as a correspondent of the qingdao morning news, i visited dr. james gilman, the president of the international committee for marco polo studies in england. in this picture, this is james, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. this is a true story. /chuzhong/chusan/ 65 years ago, james lived in qingdao. then he was only 5 years old. he often visited the aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. he was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure. in the late 1930s, when the japanese occupied qingdao, his family had to leave. on his last day in qingdao, he ran to the aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth. he kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. it was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. finally he decided to put right his childish error. in 20xx, he visited qingdao and returned it to the aquarium with his sincere apologies. he received a warm welcome. when james visited qingdao, i accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. i was deeply touched by his honesty. it has taught me a lot. i think to err is human. the important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error. honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. so we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. i would like to say to all of my friends: let’s be honest people of good moral character. thank you.

vice president johnson, mr. speaker, mr. chief justice, president eisenhower, vice president nixon, president truman, reverend clergy, fellow citizens:

we observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom xx symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning xx signifying renewal, as well as change. for i have sworn before you and almighty god the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and threexquarters ago.

the world is very different now. for man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. and yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe xx the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of god.

we dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of americans xx born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.

let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty. this much we pledge xx and more.

to those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends. united there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. divided there is little we can do xx for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder. to those new states whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. we shall not always expect to find them supporting our view. but we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom xx and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.

if there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is theability to profit by defeat. every success i know has been achieved because theperson was able to analyze defeat and actually profit by it in his nextundertaking. confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed indeed to failure.for it isn't defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeatthe guide and encouragement to success.

defeats are nothing to be ashamed of. they are routine incidents in thelife of every man who achieves success. but defeat is a dead loss unless you doface it without humiliation, analyze it and learn why you failed. defeat, inother words, can help to cure its own cause. not only does defeat prepare us forsuccess, but nothing can arouse within us such a compelling desire to succeed.if you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull it away, he will cling more andmore tightly until his whole weight is suspended. it is this same reaction whichshould give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. if youexploit the power which defeat gives, you can accomplish with it far more thanyou are capable of.

nature is our mother:

let me begin my speech with a replay of scenes familiar to most, if not all, of those present here today.

take. take. take.. the relationship between a mother and a child always seems to follow such a pattern. i know my mother is always there for me, providing me with everything i need; from food to clothing, from tuition to pocket money. i never thought twice about all she did until one day she said,

like a child endlessly asking, we humans, throughout history, have been continually demanding what we desire from nature. we enjoy the comfort and beauty of our furniture, yet we never bother to think about the serious soil erosion caused by deforestation. we take it for granted that we must warm ourselves in winter times, yet we seldom realize the burning away of precious natural resources.we appreciate all the prosperity from the development of modern industry, yet few would give the slightest consideration to the global air and water pollution caused by industrial wastes. our ruthless exploitation has permanently impaired our mother earth.as we tragically learned from last summer's floods. we cannot continue our carelessness. finally, standing here at the threshold of the 21st century, we cannot help thinking of our posterity. nature is not only the mother of the present generation, but

also the mother of the generations to come. how severely our descendents will criticize us if we leave them a barren and lifeless mother? how much more they will appreciate us if we give them a world of harmony to inherit? let us start respecting and caring for nature from now on. let us start the campaign of creating a mutually beneficial relationship between people and nature right from this moment. with this new start, i firmly believe that our children, and our children's children will live in a brand new age of green trees, clean air, crystal water, blue sky and an even more promising world!

we are the world ,we are the future

someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. i don?t know who wrote these words, but i?ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

we are young. “how to spend the youth?” it is a meaningful question. to answer it, first i have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” youth is not a time of life, it?s a state of mind. it?s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. it?s the matter of the will. it?s the freshness of the deep spring of life.

youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years . we grow old by deserting our ideals. years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ?s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what?s next and the joy of the game of living . in the center of your heart and my heart there?s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

apoet said “to see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. several days ago, i had a chance to listen to a lecture. i learnt a lot there. i?d like to share it with all of you. let?s show our right palms. we can see three lines that show how our love.career and life is. i have a short line of life. what about yours? i wondered whether we could see our future in this way. well, let?s make a fist. where is our future? where is our love, career, and life? tell me.yeah, it is in our hands. it is held in ourselves.

we all want the future to be better than the past. but the future can go better itself. don?t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. from the past, we?ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. we?ve learnt that we can?t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. failure doesn?t mean you don?t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way. failure doesn?t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.

as what i said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. the past has gone. nothing we do will change it. but the future is in front of us. believe that what we give to the world, the world will give to us. and from today on, let?s be the owners of ourselves, and speak out “we are the world, we are the future.”

爱国--为祖国栋梁打下基础,让香烟远离祖国;

崇德--念父母,为他人,远离香烟;

团结--手牵手,心连心,共同戒掉香烟;

奋进--把我们打下建造成绿色,文明,健康的校园!

同学们,行动吧!我的演讲完毕,谢谢大家。
